Summer can be uncomfortable for humans and pets alike. In addition to ensuring your pets get enough shade and water, there are a few things you can do in your home, particularly in regard to your HVAC system, that can help make your home more comfortable. In today’s post, the residential HVAC contractors at Sierra Air share tips that can help keep your pets cool this summer.
Replace your air filter. First, you need to make sure your air conditioning system is in good shape in order to ensure reliable operation throughout the season. In addition to keeping up with required maintenance, make sure to replace your air filters every 90 days. During the summer season, you may need to do this as often as every 60 days, as air filters tend to catch more dust and mold at this time, as well as animal hairs and dander.
Let your pets in. Pets respond to heat differently than humans. For instance, pets don’t have sweat glands to help them cool down. While many pet owners use a fan to cool down their pets, this isn’t enough. Leaving them outdoors in the middle of summer can put them at risk of heatstroke. Remember, if you’re cranking up your air conditioning system during the summer, your pets will need the comfort your indoor space will provide.
If your pets tend to track in dirt on their paws or pollen and leaves in their fur, you can set up a staging area that allows direct access to a patio door or back door. You can also use this for cleaning off muddy boots or for disinfecting items after a trip to the grocery store.
Stay downstairs. The lowest level of your home is much cooler than the rest of the house. Have everyone, including your pets, gather at your ground-level living room or basement rec room when it’s hot outside. This lets you focus indoor cooling in areas that don’t require as much compared to the rest of the house. In addition to energy savings, this makes it easy to keep an eye on your kids and pets and attend to their needs.
